K-5

Literacy

Literacy is our highest priority as a district, and nowhere is that goal more of a focal point than in the K-5 classroom. In order to meet the grade level demands of the Common Core Standards, MSAD 60 teachers utilize a guided reading instructional model, with high degrees of personalization and a focus on critical literacy skills, including fluency, phonics, phonemic awareness and comprehension. Additionally, teachers utilize the Lucy Calkins writer's workshop model to support the teaching of writing. The scope and sequence in ELA is available below for each grade level. Note: MSAD Teachers can access all literacy related curriculum materials by going to the master curriculum document.

Math

In Mathematics, Grades 1-5 classrooms utilize Everyday Mathematics newly revised program, EM4. Everyday Mathematics is a comprehensive mathematics program engineered for the Common Core State Standards. Developed by The University of Chicago School Mathematics Project, Everyday Mathematics helps students achieve true mastery of the CCSS by continually reinforcing math concepts through concrete real-world applications and carefully constructed learning progressions.

Kindergarten students will experience mathematics through a locally developed curriculum that is designed to teach the skills and knowledge outlined in the CCSS in a interactive and age appropriate fashion. These units of study will prepare all learners for mathematics learning in grade 1 and beyond.

Science

While Literacy and Math instruction are the highest priorities in the early grades, it is critical that we also prepare students with a solid foundation in science and technology. Our current elementary science program is based on the Full Option Science System. The FOSS Program was created specifically to provide students and teachers with meaningful experiences through active participation in scientific practices. Students will experience specific science units at each grade level as listed below.

Social Studies

It is also critical that we prepare students to be active and involved citizens who understand the world around them, from their local community to the global marketplace. Whenever possible teachers try to integrate social studies to this end, students will experience specific social studies units at each grade level listed below.
