Keys & Shortcuts

Chromebooks, like any computer have several different ways to accomplish the same task. Often, the most efficient way is by utilizing keyboard shortcut combinations which allow the user take quick action on regular or repetitive tasks like copy and pasting.

This is the shortcuts app, it's a searchable index of all the Chromebooks keyboard shortcuts.

You can access this application by using the shortcut: Ctrl+Alt+/

Function Keys

Function keys are special physical shortcut keys that are programmed for a specific purpose. They are regularly used in combination with other keys to extend their usage. Shown in this image is the top row of the Chromebooks keyboard which are all functions keys. These function keys may differ based on what model of Chromebook you are using

The search key is a unique function key specific to Chromebooks and ChromeOS and is position where a standard keyboard Caps Lock key is (see below for Caps Lock shortcut).

This key opens the app launchers Google search bar and is a quick way to look something up on Google.

Popular Shortcuts

Take a screenshot: Press Ctrl + Show windows (or Ctrl + F5).
Take a partial screenshot: Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows (or Shift + Ctrl + F5), then click and drag.
Take a screenshot (on tablets): Press Power button + Volume down button.
Turn Caps Lock on or off: Press Search + Alt.
Lock your screen: Press Search + L.
Sign out of your Google Account: Press Shift + Ctrl + q (twice).
See all keyboard shortcuts: Press Ctrl + Alt + /.
