MSAD#11 is Google Suite district, which means we utilize Google products and software across our district with our technology. This includes Google Gmail.
Each Student will be issued a Google Gmail account to use for communication to teachers and peers as well as gain access to Googles education tools like Docs, Sheets, Slides and others.
Students will log into the Chromebooks using their Gmail accounts. Student Gmail account usernames are formulated as follows:
Students full legal first name + last initial + 2 digit year of graduation
Example:
John Snow, who is a 2020 Senior would be johns20@msad11.org
Jane Doe, who is in 1st grade would be janed32@msad11.org
Students in grades PREK-3 can log in with Clever Badges. Click here for more information.
ChromeOS is a Google created lightweight operating system that uses Google Chrome as its inspiration for the user interface and features. If you have used the Google Chrome browser before you should feel quite comfortable navigating this operating system.
This is what the Chrome OS desktop looks like, from Left to right you have the Launcher button, the Shelf where pinned and open apps are displayed, a sign out button, and the System Tray where you can access important settings.
This the App Drawer which is displayed after you click the Launcher. The app drawer displays all the available apps currently installed on your Chromebook. It also has a search bar that you can use to find and launch installed apps or query the Google search engine.
In the app drawer there is a built in Get Help app that contain an explorable help guide that you details the basic about your Chromebook.
The system tray is an important area of the desktop, it displays several common areas of system settings, status information and notifications.
At the top you might find some notifications letting you know when apps have updated, prompts when you have just taken a screenshot and other relevant information based on recent actions.
The top row of the tray displays the following:
your account profile picture (you can change this image in settings)
A sign out button a power button that turns the device off
A lock screen button which locks the screen and prompts for a password
A setting button which is a shortcut to the Settings application
In the middle section you have six icons related to common system settings that you might want to change:
Wifi icon will display the current wifi you are connected to as well as signal strength.
The bluetooth icon tells you if bluetooth is on or off and is where you can connect to other bluetooth devices or accessories.
The notifications button is where you can enable Do Not Disturb mode and manage which apps are giving you notifications.
The night light icon toggles on or off the night light which changes the screen brightness settings to be easier on your eyes in low light environments.
The accessibility icon give you quick access to several built in functions such as spoken feedback, mouse highlighter, and a magnifier.
The bottom section allows to you change the sound and screen brightness settings, and displays information on the date, time and battery life.
The settings application is where you can access all the other system settings outside of the system tray. Students are encourage to explore these settings but be aware that some settings you will not be able to change because they are managed for all of MSAD#11 chromebooks so suit our deployment.
