During our District REACH Days, this year our theme was inventions/ innovations. Students learned about unusual inventions that have changed the world. We practiced creative thinking skills, brainstorming techniques, and gained an understanding of the engineering design process (ask, imagine, plan, create, improve). With activities we also learned how to use the SCAMPER technique (substitute, combine, adapt, modify, eliminate and reverse) to help solve problems and ignite creativity. We supplemented our work with the book Lunch Money by Andrew Clements as a read aloud during our lunches together.
confetti launcher Challenge
The students’ first challenge was to create a confetti launcher (in small groups) using the engineering design process with their creative thinking skills. Groups were provided with the same materials which included: a roll of duct tape, paint stirrers, string, cereal boxes, straws, rubber bands, large and small paper cups. The goal was to create a confetti launcher that could send confetti (whole punch circles collected from the copiers) the furthest. What a fun mess the whole process was.
Below is a video of the final launching event

Shark Tank Challenge
In groups of 4 or 5, students were asked to design, invent, or use innovation to create a product/ prototype that solves a problem. Groups developed an advertisement and created a display to effectively market their product.
Students had to complete the following steps:
What would your group like to invent and what problem does it help solve?
Fill out a purchase order for materials needed for your prototype.
Create a cost comparison of other similar products on the market to determine your price point.
Create a prototype using the Engineering Design Process.
Develop an advertising plan for your product.
Sadly, due to snow days, students ran out of time and were not able to create a video oftheir commercials. Some students performed their commercial live to the Shark Tank Judges.
Our judges this year were:
Tom Landberg- Assistant Principal at GRMS
Kady Gould- Principal at Helen Thompson School
Julie Hallett- Nurse at GRMS
Brett Palmer- Sophomore REACH student at GAHS
Thanks to our judges and students, the MSAD#11 REACH ‘Shark Tank’ was a success! As we made it happen on March 12, it was one of the last in-person events of our 2019-2020 school year.
Student Projects
Group 1: Trashy Trap
Russell, Elliot, Randi-lyn, Hannah
Catches trash from the ocean without harming sea life. Once the trash is collected, it is recycled.
Group 2: RMS-Reusable Marker System
Bristol, Natalie, Molly, Dominic, Madison
Instead of throwing away markers once they’re empty, you can refill them with specific ink in order to use them multiple times in order to decrease the amount of markers that are thrown in landfills.
Group 3: The Elevation Station
Maz, Mia, Elsie, Quinn
A device that sits on a desk in order to elevate computers or other objects so that they are at a comfortable height which helps to improve posture and reduce back pain.
Group 4: Si y No Game
Celena, Ethen, Alex, Sarah, Isaiah
A board game where the goal is to get kids and adults away from technology and connecting with one another in person.
