Looking for March Madness? The Boston Marathon? Formula One Grand Prix? Major League Baseball? They’re not happening today! The coronavirus has upended the entire sports world, postponing big events like the 2020 Olympics, which have not been postponed since 1996. Most people know about the Olympics, but what about other sports tournaments that should be happening right now? Which games, races, and other sporting matches have been canceled or postponed due to the coronavirus? Read on to see!
March sports that were canceled, altered, and postponed:
Tokyo Marathon - Scheduled for March 1st and was restricted to only the elite runners.
NBA - Postponed starting March 11th
NHL - Postponed starting March 12th
MLS - Postponed starting March 12th
March Madness - The college basketball tournament from March 14th to April 5th was canceled.
Formula One Australian Grand Prix - Scheduled for March 15th and was cancelled.
New York City Half-Marathon - Scheduled for March 15th and was cancelled.
MLB Regular Season - Scheduled to start on March 26th, has been postponed to July.
China vs. Guam Soccer Match - Scheduled for March 31st and was relocated to Thailand where it was held with no spectators.
April sports that were canceled, altered, and postponed:
Finnish Open - Scheduled for April 2nd to 5th was postponed
Berlin Half Marathon - Scheduled for April 5th and was cancelled
Circuit de Ardennes - Scheduled for April 10th to 13th and was cancelled
Fencing European Zonal Olympic Qualifier - Scheduled for April 18th to 19th and was postponed
Boston Marathon - Scheduled for April 20th and has been postponed to October 4th
May sports that were canceled, altered, and postponed:
Kentucky Derby - Scheduled for May 2nd and was postponed until September 5th
All these events may have been canceled, but it looks like sports are slowly making a comeback. The NFL recently released the schedule for the 2020 NFL season, showing that they currently have no plans of postponing the season. Major League Baseball recently announced that they plan on resuming the season in July, with Spring Training kicking back up in June. Baseball is restarting in Korea, so if you’re looking for baseball, check out ESPN in the afternoons. For soccer fans, teams in Germany, Spain, and Italy are resuming training for their season and tennis fans have something to look forward to as well, an altered season is in the works with the French Open rescheduled for Sept. 20 to Oct. 4. As more places are begging to ease coronavirus restrictions, the new normal of sports is on the horizon.
