2020 may have been one of the worst years in history. COVID struck, Wall Street crashed, and climate disasters hit the world. But through all the chaos and sadness, the 2020 presidential election was a major event of the year. The entire country hung on through late 2020 as wildly unpopular incumbent president Donald Trump had been struggling through major events such as the BLM movement and COVID-19 wreaking havoc throughout the world. Joe Biden, his opponent, was favored to win by most, but everyone knew it was going to come down to the wire. But in the end, on that fateful day of November 7th, the results came in. Joe Biden had defeated Donald Trump by almost 70 electoral votes. Trump’s followers did not take the news well and were encouraged at a rally by Trump himself, saying the election was taken from him. He claimed the election was faked and his followers infamously stormed the Capitol on January 6th, 2021, while the electoral votes were counted. Trump had motivated this mob, which led to him being banned on Twitter (though he was reinstated recently in a controversial decision by new Twitter owner Elon Musk) and impeached for a second time for possibly attempting to overthrow the government.
The trial for impeachment is currently underway and could imprison Trump if he is found guilty. Trump did not bother to go to Joe Biden’s inauguration, out of protest that the election was stolen, and returned to his Florida estate. It turned out he had brought many important documents with him. Even if any of the White House workers didn’t notice, the FBI certainly did. They searched his Florida estate and found the documents, though some had been flushed down the toilet. In November, Trump officially announced his running in 2024, but said Mike Pence, his vice president from 2016 to 2020, would not be on the ticket and fully deserved the chants of “Hang Mike Pence'' at the Capitol storming. When asked what issues would be at stake during the election, 6th grader Nathan Milkes said “Abortion and the general rights of the people.
“I think he has the support of a large part of the Republican Party but will not get enough votes to make it past the primaries,” Milkes said on how many votes Trump would get. In recent polls Trump has been “trumped” by Florida governor Ron DeSantis in the 2024 Republican Party Nominee poll. So, it’s possible Trump may not even be on the ticket. If this happens Trump would probably run as an Independent Party. As vice president, South Dakota governor Kristi Noem and South Carolina senator Tim Scott had been considered. In April 2021 Trump said he was thinking about DeSantis for vice president, but he has since been criticizing DeSantis. In polls for the month of December, an average of 38% said they would vote for the current Vice President Kamala Harris, an average of 39% for Trump, 40% for DeSantis, and an average of 41% for Biden.
So it seems Biden has the upper hand. Contrarily, in a student poll of some 6th graders, the vast majority said they would vote for Harris. Trump hasn’t been doing the best in his campaign, the campaign has been called “Catastrophic” by Chuck Todd of NBC and “Sad, lonely, thirsty, broken, and basically pretend” by Olivia Nuzzi of New York Magazine. Trump hasn’t been having the best relationship with other Republicans, saying that the Republicans view on abortion was what made them underachieve in the elections. He even kicked off the new year by saying “It wasn’t my fault.” Other Republicans like Mitch McConnell blame Trump, saying that the public view of him made them lose support. In the end, Trump has a very hard and interesting journey ahead of him if he wishes to retake the important mantle of US President, and the world will see what happens in 2024.
