Spring Break...Not

Spring break, a nice time in April to relax with your family. Enjoyable, right? Yeah, until it got canceled. Due to the Covid-19 epidemic New York governor Andrew Cuomo has issued a stay home order, which means nobody can have large gatherings, like school. At the writing of this article, school has been closed for five weeks. Online schooling started up 4 weeks ago. Some say that spring break was cancelled because online schooling may be more flexible, and to some people less rigorous than regular schooling, and because some healthcare workers need their children to go to school. Originally they did not cancel all of spring break, only one week of it.  Thursday and Friday were still supposed to be days off for spring break until on the 1st of April it was canceled entirely. Some people were not happy. Even before it was cancelled entirely people were still very annoyed. A survey run in the Math and Science Exploratory school showed that 70% of students who answered the survey were not happy about spring break being canceled. 6th grader Amaya Williams stated “They took spring break from us for no apparent reason”. Students are not the only ones who were less than happy about spring break being canceled. When asked how people around them reacted to this cancellation, a survey I created for Wolf Press shows that 62% of parents, siblings or relatives also had a problem with the cancellation.  But, all of the staff at our school gave us fun, cultural enrichment activities to do either by ourselves or with family! 77% of students who answered my survey think ‘yes, work has been toned down this week’.  Ms447 was not the only school who had given their students ‘Not-Spring Break’. Ms 51 Sixth Grader Eli Lopez Stated that for Ms51 the work has also been toned down for the time of ‘Not Spring Break’.To conclude, people really disliked the government's decision to cancel spring break but some schools thought this is unfair and let their students have their well earned spring break.
