If you have been looking at the news lately, you may have heard of Mcdonalds introducing its own version of the Impossible Burger, the “McPlant”. What is this new plant-based burger craze all about? I decided to find out for myself.
Like most Mcdonald's products do, the Mcplant started as a tiny seedling of an idea. This vegetarian option was sprouted by Ian Borden, the president of Mcdonald's international marketing team. There was consensus on the team and the idea eventually reached the CEO. He orchestrated a deal with Beyond Meat, who owns Impossible Burger.
The McPlant burger will not be available in the USA until 2021, so we purchased Beyond Meat burgers, the supplier for the McDonalds McPlant, and made our own. The first thing I noticed was the sizzling, it was louder than a normal hamburger, but smelled just as good. The second thing I noticed was the smoke, there was a lot. So much that it set off the smoke alarm in my house. (is this good or bad) I had to run around and wave a towel under our smoke detector, I was getting a real fast food experience. Now for the taste. The taste is definitely different from a normal burger, but not that far off, it’s not your typical veggie burger which can be not great in a lot of different ways. The Beyond Meat Burger is not as juicy as a regular burger, but I have actually had dryer burgers before. With cheese, onions, lettuce and a bun, it’s an OK burger.
After thinking over it for a long time though, I think that I might eat foods like this more often, because if everyone went vegetarian for just one day a week, the U.S would save 100 billion gallons of water, and we would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1.2 million tons of carbon dioxide. That’s a big impact, and if it is as easy as changing your usual menu order from Mcdonalds, I'm Lovin It!
