Does the NFL Pay Too Much Attention to Taylor Swift?

The Super Bowl is known by many to be the most exciting sports event in the world. Amid all the excitement and pre-game talks, there was one thing that the major sports channels were excited about: Taylor Swift?

Let me be honest.  I’m pretty sure that before the game, the camera pointed more toward Taylor Swift rather than a lot of the actual players for te 49ers and Chiefs respectively

This spark was formed when famous pop star Taylor Swift started dating Chiefs player Travis Kelce. Soon enough, many of Taylor Swift’s fans started watching, and this created a huge debate; Is the NFL putting too much attention on Taylor Swift?

Raymond Haas from 604 seems to agree, “It’s about the game, not some random celebrity.” Now, this is not an attack on Taylor Swift, her music, or her fans, but on the NFL itself. Personally, even though it's not a huge deal, I don’t like putting too much attention on the personal lives of the players and things unrelated to the game, such as Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift is a pop star, and the attention on her should be for her music, and at a relevant moment.

However, there is one thing that is for sure, Taylor Swift is having a huge effect on the money earned,  her boyfriend and tight end for the chiefs, Travis Kelce, has his shirt sales at an all-time high, the price for a Super Bowl ticket has skyrocketed since last year. And Taylor Swift generated around three hundred million dollars for the NFL. 

However, is her presence making the game more about her, and less about the game itself? According to the Clemson News, there are several bets such as “Will Travis Kelce propose?” During the Super Bowl, the camera pointed at Taylor Swift multiple times. I remember the commentator saying something along the lines of “And of course, it’s Travis Kelce getting the first down!” which seemed like a reference to Taylor Swift. 

This could very well be a personal bias. I am not the most fond of her music, and that may affect how I see things, but considering how much they focus on the romance between Taylor Swift and Kelce, it’s for sure a possibility,
