While learning about any type of politics in school or anywhere else, more or less we all are led to think that the U.S. is a democracy compared to all the other past places, but let's think to ourselves: Is it really? Throughout the years, systems have been enforced to lead us to believe that the U.S. is still a democracy, for example, voting, but that's it. Behind the curtains, I believe the U.S. isn’t a democracy.
Think about it!
A democracy is a government controlled by the people. If the citizens control the government, why would we need all this protesting? Things that almost everyone agrees on are not being reformed. Even with all the protests, articles, and documentaries, things aren’t being changed.
The Truth!
Let’s put our minds to the recent ruling and laws on abortion. Tons of laws have been enforced upon citizens. One of these includes the recent abortion laws, which you might have heard of. The Supreme Court overturned a case that protected the rights of a woman or someone with a uterus to legally have an abortion, allowing states to illegalize abortion if they wanted to. For example, in Texas, it is a felony, and if caught having one, you could be sentenced to life in prison, including up to 10,000 dollar fines. But according to pewresearch.org, more than 60% of adult U.S. citizens believe and have said abortion should be legal. If this is the case, why are rules being made against abortion? If the majority of the people are saying that it should be legal, primarily when it mainly affects us and not the government, why are these laws being made and for the most part not being changed, even with the request and protests from the majority of people?
So now, are we controlling the government, or is the government controlling us?
