Dunkin is the Biggest Doughnut Shop,
But Donut Be Jelly
Dunkin is the most prevalent and most popular stop for doughnuts, or so the buyers say. Dunkin has become the largest donut shop chain in America. The general consensus is that when you want doughnuts, and you want them quick, chances are Dunkin is where you’ll head. If the entire United States were only the doughnut shops that existed there, and you dropped a marble on it from space, your chances to hit a Dunkin is 11,300 in 25,000. Or you could hit a guy from Boston wearing a Red Sox hat walking into a Dunkin.Their slogan does not lie, “America Runs On Dunkin”. They sure have the quantity, but do they have the quality to go up against our Mom and Pop Shop?
Brandon’s May be a Smaller Shop,
but Don’t Glaze Over It
Brandon’s Donuts is a small, one location store, in the heart of Carroll Gardens. It is not open for breakfast or dessert, only being open from 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm, perhaps an attempt to be hole-some? It is part of the same building as a restaurant / bar / ice skating rink, called Court Street Tavern. Ok, some odd choices, but that is one of the perks of being an independent business, right? You can decide that you will serve lunchtime donuts to ice skaters. When we saw an employee working in Bradon’s before the 12 noon opening. My mom knocked on the door and he kindly unlocked the door, and though he would not serve any doughnuts or coffee, when asked, “why doesn’t Brandon’s service the breakfast crowd”, he sorrowfully answered: “I do not know.” Sucrose, yet so far….
Let The Battle Begin!
vs
Brandon's Donuts
I’m A-glazed by Dunkin’s Doughnuts
Dunkin’s doughnuts were soft, fluffy, and had nice neat frosting. Overall, a good doughnut. One thing I noticed about Dunkin’s doughnuts is that some of the doughnuts didn’t have a memorable flavor. While Brandon’s lets you customise the doughnuts from type of doughnut, to frosting, to topping, and I can still recall the taste. Once, we were also lucky enough to be passing by Brandon’s just as a fresh batch of hot doughnuts were coming out. You could smell them from the street. My mom stopped and bought $12 worth of donuts at 3:45 on a Tuesday. She tried to explain what it was like when the Krispy Kreme hot light would come on, and the doughnuts would all come out in a glaze of glory. The bread and frosting melted in your hand and mouth, it was so flavorful and so hot, the best doughnuts ever. Once you start chewing them, you donut ever want to let them go. Except, you can’t get that at a Dunkin, because the doughnuts are never fresh, and that drives me glazy!
Saying “Doughnut Mind if I do” to Brandon’s.
I pull out the ol’ wallet, and...whoa! $11.43 for four doughnuts! Dunkin was only $7.58 for six. For a second I think that Dunkin might be a better deal after all, at $1.26 per donut vs Brandon’s $2.85 per doughnut but then I think more. I see that Brandon’s actually lets you customise your doughnuts, also, they have more interesting toppings, like M&Ms and Froot Loops. Although, they have a strange selection of doughnuts, lemon-vanilla instead of plain vanilla, raspberry instead of strawberry, creamsicle instead of orange. Doughnut try to be different? Well, in this case you should because it really works.
A Hole-some Ending.
Dunkin and Brandon’s, like coffee, have strengths and weaknesses. Dunkin is almost always open, they're everywhere, and the choices are consistent. Plus there is the lower cost, and it’s relatively inexpensive for a baked good. When you choose Brandon’s you are supporting local business and putting money back into the community. Statistically for every $100 spent at any local shop, $63 goes back to the community, that shows that you eclair! Yes, if you live in the United States, (especially the Northeast), there is always a Dunkin nearby. But, if you happen to find yourself in Carroll Gardens Brooklyn and you’re overtaken by the urge to go ice skating, enjoy a stiff drink and a Cinnamon-Sugar-Creamsicle-Fruit-Loop doughnut, then head on down to Brandon’s Donuts (between the hours of 12 & 7pm EST that is.)
