Spoiler Alert for Episodes 1 through 4.
Most, if not 99% of people have been watching WandaVision recently, Marvel’s new series available on Disney+, and they have been doing so religiously. The show follows Wanda Maximoff, a powerful superhero, as she acts in a sitcom of her own making in a town called Westview. Vision, who in the Marvel universe died, is acting along with her.
Many people really like this show, as it skillfully incorporates the comic books into the show, as well as giving us a strong female superhero. They leave small, or sometimes large references to the comics. It was also a really fun experience to watch it episode by episode each week and to be given ample time during the week when WV was not streaming, to compare theories, of which there were, SO many. Believe me. No Joke.
There were some criticisms about the show too. Many thought it felt rushed near the end, though this may be partly because of filming getting cut short due to the pandemic. The pandemic also meant some actors couldn’t be part of the finale. Another criticism was the show feeling unfinished. While this can also be blamed on the filming being cut short, but a large part of this is also because this show was always meant to lead into the next stage of the Marvel films, like the new Doctor Strange Movie, Multiverse of Madness, which Wanda is in.
Another criticism is that people felt they needed to know all previous Marvel lore, and have watched all the movies (all 27 of them). I understand where this is coming from, as much of the show is stemming from plotlines in previous movies. There are also many references and characters from previous films. This said though, a quote from one person we interviewed, who had no context of the other Marvel movies said they felt it did not detract from the experience of watching it. They were still able to enjoy it, though they did get the sense there was stuff they did not know.
The show itself is amazing and grabs characters from all over the Marvel universe. Monica Rambeau, A.K.A. Lieutenant Trouble from Captain Marvel, who is now all grown up, Darcy Lewis, the intern from the Thor movies is the mind behind figuring out about the “Maximoff Anomaly”, and FBI Agent Jimmy Woo, the aspiring magician, from Ant-Man And The Wasp. Wanda Maximoff and Vision are also heavily featured in earlier Marvel movies, though have never been quite so focused on.
I also think Marvel should be praised for going outside of their usual format, of pretty formulaic movies, and trying something new. I think it was a huge success, and I am glad they are doing it with other shows, such as Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and a yet to be released Loki show.
This show is so amazing, but not your typical Marvel superhero action blockbuster, but if you want to see that, we strongly recommend you check out the new show, Falcon And The Winter Soldier. If you like looking back at the decades, the ’50s through the 2000s, but also like that mystery and action Marvel feel, this is the show for you!
