Whether students care about how they present themselves at school or not, some looks that are presented on fashion shows such as Project Runway and Queer Eye aren’t really common looks seen at 447. But when you are willing to express yourself, any place can be a runway. Our school is a diverse and creative space, filled with people who find different ways to show their personalities, and that can be shown through people's outfits. The trends from this year have ranged from chunky loafers to color clashing and hopped over to dark academia, As Kenzo Takada said.
“Fashion is like eating; you shouldn't stick to the same menu,” Around MS447 there are many different styles, such as the classic jock, goth kids, and the people who just wear pajamas. Today we will be uncovering people’s inspirations behind their outfits. Do you think the kids at MS447 have some inspiration behind their looks, or do students just throw on whatever? Let's see what kids at 447 have to say.
“Outfits are a way I like to express myself, and I also think it's fun to come up with your own persona,” Elliot Foster from 704 expressed their love and passion towards fashion. Elliot described their style as gothic academia, an aesthetic incorporating gothic studies, literature, poetry, arts, architecture, music, and general Gothic-related topics. They have said that they DIY some of their clothing, creating a unique style with materials they find around their house. They shared with us how you can use fashion as a source for your ideas or a soft place to land.
“I find most of my inspiration for outfits on Pinterest, Instagram, and TikTok,” Elliot revealed. Pinterest is a popular app that has recently appealed to teenagers to search or create the idea that's on the tip of their tongue or to find that one cookie recipe grandma used to make when they were younger.
“I mainly get my clothing inspiration from Tiktok, Instagram, and Pinterest.” Isabella Li from 702 revealed, at the time of the interview, Izzy sported a crop top and a low-rise flare combo, deciding to wear clothing inspired by her desired aesthetic ‘streetwear’. Streetwear is an aesthetic named by itself, streetwear fashion is genuinely a chic outfit you’d wear on the street, which is basically just a casual fashion. Streetwear is originally inspired by hip-hop culture and originated back in the 90s but now is commonly popular in women's clothing trends. The streetwear fashion type is based on the vision of convenience, scarcity, and contemporary art. This style takes comfy and chic everyday apparel such as hoodies and sweatpants, graphic T-shirts, and luxury brand sneakers and then takes it onto the streets of their hometown, New York!
This is the tip of the iceberg for the atmosphere of Ms447 fashion culture, and I believe that if students took a look at the getups people have thrown on for the day, they would be set for centuries worth of knowledge about the self-expression of others, and maybe from these crumbs of aesthetics, you can try one for yourself!
