Small changes make a big difference.....
Please review the materials below. Watch the video carefully and read the informational pieces related to climate change. Additionally, check out the NASA games page. After each set of materials, complete the formative assessment to the best of your ability.
Evidence of your learning, screen shots, and results from your games and assessments should be placed on the Citizenship page of your PLP.
Taking action is a key part of citizenship and becoming a contributing member of 21st century society. CHOOSE 1 of the following options and complete the work outlined in the description. When finished, please check in with Mr. Taylor and make sure it is posted to your PLP.
Click on the What Can We Do to Help ? website. Identify 2-3 strategies that you can use to help reduce our impact on the environment.
Make one of these a goal and post it on your PLP.
When you have reviewed your results, write a properly formatted email to MR TAYLOR (Salutation, Body, Closing) that your goal, why it is important, and how your completion of the goal makes a difference.
Example 1: Email
The Green Team climate change goal I set was to stop using plastic bags and plastic straws. My goal is important because it means that there will be less trash in landfills, and there will be less plastic in the ocean. The reason why plastic is bad is because it often ends up in the ocean, and can kill sea life and pollute the environment. It is also important because the less trash there is in landfills, the better. I will achieve my goal by first, asking my parents to stop using plastic bags in my lunchbox, and instead, use reusable containers. Second, I will stop using plastic bags and straws, and instead, use paper straws or metal straws (Or just not use straws), and use reusable containers when I need to.
My goal will make a big difference, because the less plastic we use, the easier it will be for us to save the environment, but if we continue to use plastic, more plastic will build up in the oceans, and make it harder for us to solve the problem of climate change.
Example 2: Story/Essay
People everywhere are impacted by climate change, be it directly or indirectly. Air pollution, warmer summers, oceans rising - these are all symptoms of a hotter planet. Here in Montpelier, Vermont, we’ve got it pretty good. Vermont is pretty far north and while we still have unbelievably hot summers, that’s just because it’s summer. We still get a lot of snow each winter and it gets really cold.
Montpelier is the place to go if you want a little bit of a break from climate change - our tallest building is four stories tall and while many people drive cars, there are only 7.500 people. But when I say a break from climate change, I don’t really mean that as a break, as there is nowhere you can go that is not affected even a little bit. As I was writing this, some part of my brain thought, What about Antarctica? There’s almost no one there, only to be interrupted by another part of my brain screaming, THE GLACIERS ARE MELTING!!!!!!
Montpelier is an interesting place in that while it remains relatively untouched by the warming climate -we still have cold winters and there are no coastlines that could flood - we’re all affected in one way or another. The citizens of Montpelier tend to be very radical, and we have many protests and marches. In this way, we’re all affected, but most often it’s because of our reaction, not global events themselves. In short, we have yet to feel the full effects of a warming planet, but when they come, we’ll be ready.
From the Climate Mobilzation Campaign:
"The goal of the Climate Emergency Campaign is to compel governments, starting at the local level and building upward, to adopt an emergency response to climate change and the broader ecological crisis. Entering emergency mode is the critical first step to launching the comprehensive mobilization required to rescue and rebuild civilization."

We have several goals and motivations for the climate emergency declaration. We would like this declaration to have a statewide political impact. It may get the attention of other towns as well as the State legislators and governor. Burlington—Vermont’s largest city— recently declared a climate emergency. We also hope that the declaration will help push Montpelier to work even harder to accomplish it’s own Net Zero Resolution goals. These goals are hard to meet and require everyone to understand the urgency of the emergency.
City counselors and the mayor really appreciate hearing from residents. If you would like to encourage them to vote for this declaration, you can email them and tell them why. Some ideas include: your thoughts about climate emergency & how it impacts you, what you think the city should do, how you would like Montpelier to help lead Vermont on this issue, any particular climate issues or factors that especially interest or affect you.
What’s most important is that you use your own words and express your own thoughts. The letter doesn’t have to be long, but it does need to be your own. They are not persuaded by form letters or “cut and paste” information.

Example Email to City Councilor
Greetings Counselor Casey,
I am an 8th grade student at Main Street Middle School, as well as a District 2 resident.
I strongly urge you to consider voting in favor of declaring a climate emergency in Montpelier. The youth of today are looking to decision-makers like you to represent our best interests, and that includes protecting our home and our future.
Although Montpelier is the smallest state capital, we still have the power to make big changes and ensure a sustainable future for all.Your actions tomorrow can be part of a chain reaction to gather more support for this cause.
I want to grow up knowing that I did everything I could to ensure a safe and stable future for this planet, and all of its residents. That includes putting pressure on adults in power, so once again, please vote in favor of declaring a climate emergency tomorrow.
Thank you for your time,
The Environmental Protection Agency is one of the major government departments charged with keeping our environment safe, healthy, and flourishing.
Under President Trump, the EPA's mission has changed significantly. Research the different ways that the EPA has changed, what it's new goals are and how those goals support (or don't) a sustainable future.
TO EARN YOUR ACT BADGE,
In a well-crafted email to Mr. Taylor please explain at least two resources from the document that might be incorporated into our Green Team work.
Based on your understanding of the issues related to climate change, your committee, and your personal interests, please identify three organizations that are working on the issue.
Local: identify a local organization that is currently working on the issue that you have identified. Where are they located? What is their mission? Explore their website or online information to get a better sense of the work they are completing.
Regional: find an organization in New England that continues to work on your environmental issue. What work are they doing and why is it important? Who does their work impact? Do you have any way of rating this organization?
National: find a national organization that is addressing your issue. Where are they located and what have they accomplished? How many years have they been working on the problem? Do they donate to specific politicians or political parties?
Create a Google slideshow of at least five slides.
Slideshow should include:
Introduction Slide
3 Slides -- One for each organization that identifies organization, mission, and local actions.
Resources
Add a resources slides that identifies, in correctly formatted MLA style, the resources you used for your research
Choose one of the following options. When you have completed the summative, make an appointment with Mr. Taylor to assess the work.
Create an explanatory podcast of less than 90 seconds that identifies 2 causes and effects of climate change.
Make sure to include evidence and details to support your ideas.
Cite your sources at the end of the podcast.
Create a poster that identifies 2 causes and effects of climate change.
Make sure to include evidence and details to support your ideas.
Use illustrations and graphics to emphasize your points.
Cite your sources on the poster.
Create a model that represents 2 causes and effects of climate change.
Make sure to include evidence and details to support your ideas.
Cite your sources utilized to develop your model.
