The final two years of the MSMS_Sustain classroom are focused on the Act, Connect and Communicate elements of our educational plan. Students begin utilizing their understanding of sustainability and concepts of climate action to connect with local organizations, use project based learning to act on what they know and then communicate those findings effectively. The following list is an example of the intended learning that might occur in 7th and 8th grade classrooms:
Personal Learning Plans and Setting Goals
Kitchen Safety -- Review
Compost Cooking
MSMS_Sustain: Independent Projects
Community Walks, Phenology and Climate Change
Seasonal Curriculum: The Harvest, Apples in the Autumn, OverWintering and Sugar Season, Planting
Proposed
MSMS_Sustain Fundraising -- syrup and pie sales
Community Drives
Great Locker Clean Out
As we begin the new quarter, students will be asked to reflect on their growth and learning over the past 2-3 years at Main Street Middle School.
Specifically, students will be asked to identify skills and dispositions that they do well, skills that might be challenging and areas of growth.
Once those are identified, students will communicate their reflections using a graphic organizer and the MSMS_Sustain writing process.
The three spheres of sustainability serve as a foundation for our course of study. Using Environment, Equity and Economics as lenses to examine local and community issues, students will connect their project based learning activities to each of the elements.
