A current sports physical is required for a student athlete to participate in team sports. This includes participation in tryouts, practices and competitions.
The physical examination must have been completed within the past 13 months for a student to begin the season. However, once the 13 months has lapsed, an updated physical examination is required for a student to remain eligible to participate. This is a requirement of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA).
The school nurse reviews the physical examination documentation for each student athlete and communicates sports clearance and any health considerations that they need to know to the coach and Athletic Trainer.
Excerpt from the MIAA Official Handbook (56.1)
"All students must pass a physical examination prior to participation in High School Athletics. A physical exam covers the student for 13 months from the exam date. A student’s eligibility will terminate once a physical has reached the 13 month limit".
"Physical examinations must be performed by a duly registered Licensed Physician, Physician’s Assistant or Nurse Practitioner. "
