Weekly Learning

Week of 11/8-11/12

This week we are working with consonant digraphs (ch, tch, sh, th, ph, ng, wh). As your child is reading at home, have them point to words that have the consonant digraph sounds. They could even make a running list of these words for the week. Examples include chop, catch, shape, that, phone, bring, which)

We are also working with identifying plural nouns (people, places, things or animals). Again, it would be helpful to have them find the nouns in the stories they read or write. They could even categorize the nouns by their types.

We have also been discussing abbreviations (Mister = Mr., Tuesday = Tues., November = Nov., etc.) A fun challenge for your child would be to see where they see abbreviations at home and to record them on a piece of paper.

In math we are working on two-digit addition with regrouping & adding coins (Quarters, dimes, nickels, & pennies). Good practice would be to give your child two 2 digit numbers and having them use the regrouping strategy when adding the two numbers. For money, good practice would be to provide them with a certain number of coins and have them add up the total amount of money. Then, have them write the total amount using both the cents and dollar sign.

As always, math fact practice will simply make your child's life easier as they get into harder math.

In writing we are publishing their personal narratives and will soon be sharing. Next, we will begin our persuasive writing unit.

In unit studies we are starting a science unit teaching how plants and animals need each other.
