CAS Handbook 2023

CAS Handbook

This document addresses the IB philosophy of CAS and the MNHS CAS requirements of every IBDP student.

Creativity, activity, service (CAS) is at the heart  of the IB Diploma Program. It is one of the three essential elements in every student's Diploma Program experience.

Creativity: exploring and extending ideas leading to an original or interpretive product or performance

Activity: physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle

Service: collaborative and reciprocal engagement with the community in response to an authentic need

Millard North has two excellent faculty who help students with their CAS responsibilities.

How long  have you been advising CAS?

Forever!  Just kidding, I believe since 2004.  There have been many changes throughout the years with CAS requirements. The biggest one is probably the move away from counting hours and focusing on a balance of "experiences" in the three different strands.

What do you teach?

AP Human Geography and AP U.S. History

What benefits do students receive from you/CAS in general?

CAS helps students have experiences outside of the traditional educational environment and helps students enhance their personal and interpersonal development.

What you want parents/students/the public to know about your role in CAS?

I see my role as that of a mentor - I want students to be able to talk with me about CAS and brainstorm ideas. My role is not to plan experience for them, but to help guide them on the path toward the successful completion of CAS experiences.  Students should meet with a CAS Coordinator at least two times each semester or whenever they need additional guidance.  These meetings are held during their 5th hour lunch or study hall.  The meetings are important because it helps make sure students are on the right track.

How long have you been advising CAS?

This is my first year advising CAS!

What do you teach?

AP World History, IB World History, Theory of Knowledge

What benefits do students receive from you/CAS in general?

CAS is part of the core of IB because it is about developing more in students than just their academic abilities.  CAS is where students have the opportunity to find themselves, pursue their interests, and explore their place in the world.

What you want parents/students/the public to know about your role in CAS?

I look forward to working with students to reflect upon their experiences.
