Here is the phonics learning continuum:
1. Learn letter names and sounds
2. Decode consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words such as cat, dog, pin, set, and bun.
3. Decode words containing blends (CCVC and CVCC) words. Examples of words containing blends are sled and cast.
4. Decode words containing digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh, ph). Examples are chin, shoe, that, what, and phone.
5. Decode words with a silent e (CVCe). Examples are cake, like, note, cute, and Pete.
6. Decode words containing r-controlled vowels (ar, ir, ur, er, or). Examples are car, girl, fur, her, and corn).
7. Decode words containing advanced consonant sounds (x, qu, kn, wr, gn, -tch, -dge). Examples are box, quick, knot, write, gnat, witch, and bridge)
8. Decode words containing advanced vowel sounds or what we like to call vowel teams. Some of these are also called dipthongs or vowel digraphs...lots of terminology related to phonics! Here are examples of the vowel teams each with a word:
- ai - rain
- eigh - sleigh, weight
- ey - hey!
- ay - day
- ee - see
- ey - key
- igh - light
- -y - my
- oa - boat
- ough - though
- ow - row your boat
- ew - grew
- oo - soon
- ou - cloud
- ow - how now brown cow!
- ough - thought, bought
- oo - look
- au - fault
- aw - saw
9. Decode words containing two syllables.
10. Decode words containing prefixes and/or suffixes.
11. Decode words containing three or more syllables
