Fluency is the ability to read smoothly with automaticity. Students who are fluent, read with expression and a high level of accuracy. Students also attend to punctation as they read. We tell our students that we want them to read at the same speed they speak.

There is a high correlation between reading rates and comprehension. Students who read fluently tend to comprehend text.
