Mini-Mounties Pre-K Registration Information

2026–2027 School Year

Important Update

Friday, January 16, 2025

Montclair Public Schools has received updated guidance from the New Jersey Department of Education regarding the timing of Preschool Expansion Aid (PEA) funding approvals for the 2026–2027 school year. Final funding approval for proposed additional preschool classrooms is not expected until late March or early April.

To avoid offering families site placements that may later need to be rescinded, the district will first notify families whether their child has secured a seat in the Mini-Mounties preschool program. Site placements will be released once state funding is officially confirmed.

What to Expect on January 23rd

Families will receive one of three emails by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, January 23, indicating their child’s lottery status. At this time, notifications will reflect seat status only, not a specific site placement.

1. Seat Offered
Your child has secured a funded seat in the Mini-Mounties program. Site placement will be shared once funding is confirmed.

2. Pending Funding
Your child is next in line for a seat pending approval of additional state funding. If funding is approved, your child will be offered a seat. If funding is not approved, your child will remain on the waitlist.

3. Waitlist
Your child has been placed on the Mini-Mounties waitlist. If seats become available due to families declining placements or moving out of the district offers will be made in accordance with the established randomized lottery process.

Important Dates Moving Forward

• January 23: Seat-status lottery notifications sent

• Late March / Early April: Anticipated state funding notification

• After Funding Confirmation: Site placement notifications released and registration begins

January 5 – January 9, 2026

During Tour Week, families may visit Mini-Mounties classrooms at each provider site. This is a great opportunity to:

• See classrooms

• Ask questions

• Learn more about each location’s daily routine and supports

Please note:

• The application is not first-come, first-served. Once the application closes, applications will be randomized.

• Families must rank all Mini-Mounties sites to submit an application
  
  

Priority Application Deadline

Families who submit their application by this deadline will receive priority consideration.
After the application closes:

• Applications will be randomly ordered

• Placement offers will be made based on availability, with families remaining on the waitlist during the 2025-2026 schol year prioritized for placement.

Families who are newly moving to Montclair and believe they may be eligible for an income-eligible preschool seat should email minimounties@montclair.k12.nj.us for additional information.

If your child has been placed at a provider location (MCPK, Neighborhood Childcare, YMCA, MCDC, MSU), you will need to complete the registration for BOTH Montclair Public Schools AND the assigned provider location. For DLC, Nishuane, CHB, and Hillside only the MPS registration is required. Please DO NOT complete these forms if you are on the waiting list and have not been assigned a location.
