Up to 17-1/4 inches is a 1/4 size violin (or violin SAV)
Up to 19-1/4 inches is a 1/2 size violin (or violin SAV)
Up to 21 inches is a 3/4 size violin (or violin SAV)
Up to 22 inches is a 4/4 size violin (or violin SAV)

Two factors are used to determine the proper cello size. When in doubt, select the smaller sized cello.
Height:
4 feet - 4 feet 6 inches is a 1/2 size cello
4 feet 6 inches - 5 feet is a 3/4 size cello
5 feet and up is a 4/4 size cello
Fingerspan (comfortably spread hand, measure tip of the index finger to tip of the pinky):
3.25 - 3.75 inches is a 1/2 size cello
3.75 - 4.25 inches is a 3/4 size cello
4.25 or more inches is a 4/4 size cello
Your student will start on a 1/4-size bass.
