Obtaining an Instrument

We strongly recommend that your instrument is looked over for any necessary repairs. Please contact us if you would like your student's Band or Orchestra teacher to look over your instrument and, if necessary, refer you to a music store for any needed repairs. 

Most repair stores will give you an estimate before making repairs, so you can make an informed decision between making the repairs or renting or purchasing an instrument.

If your student is interested in learning violin, viola, cello, or bass, make sure your instrument is the correct size for your student. Sizing information can be found under String Instrument Sizes.

We recommend renting instruments from Instrumental Music Company because they provide:

• Teacher-approved instruments from trusted manufacturers.

• Free school delivery! An Instrumental Music Company representative visits our MPSD schools weekly, picking up instruments for maintenance and returning instruments as well as delivering accessory orders.

• Maintenance & Repair is included in your rental plan, protecting you against anything affecting the playing condition of the instrument you are renting.

• ORCHESTRA INSTRUMENTS: As your student grows, so does your instrument! As long as you are renting an instrument, when it is time for your student to move to a larger instrument you can swap out your smaller instrument for a larger instrument. We recommend purchasing instruments from a music store because:

• They sell quality brands and models of instruments.

• They stand behind their products if they break.

• Non-music store retailers may sell cheaper instruments, but these cheap brands:

  • • are more difficult for students to play, resulting in frustration.

    • sound bad, so students think it is their fault when it's actually the instrument's fault.

    • are often unrepairable, resulting in a higher cost when you must replace the entire instrument.

The MPSD has instruments available for families who demonstrate a financial need.

A $50 rental fee will be assigned in Infinite Campus to students who are assigned an MPSD-owned instrument and accessories for their use at home. This rental fee will cover normal wear of the assigned instrument. Families will be required to pay additional fees for repair or replacement of the assigned instrument and/or accessories caused by intentional damage, damage beyond repair, loss, or failure to return the instrument at the end of the current school year or if the family leaves the MPSD. Please note: Families who qualify for Free & Reduced Meals are eligible to have this rental fee waived. To qualify, families must complete or update their school registration information in Infinite Campus each new school year.
