Biology
Year long course: Grade 10
This course involves the study of living things. This encompasses a range of specific organisms, various types of life, the mechanisms by which these organisms survive and reproduce, and the systems and conditions in which they thrive. Topics covered include cells, DNA/RNA, genetics, ecology, and evolution. Students work together and in groups to solve problems and complete labs. This course is taught through a variety of media, including lectures, lab work, inquiry-based learning, and small group discussions.

IB DP SL Biology * Only offered for the 25-26 school year

Term: Year Course
Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of Biology
IB Assessment: Students are eligible to take the IB SL exam
This is a one-year course that culminates in students being able to take the IB SL Biology exam. The topics covered are those listed by IB for the DP SL Biology course. Units of study include evolution, ecology, genetics, DNA and protein synthesis, cells, plants, and many others. This course is extremely rigorous, and some topics will require additional coverage outside of class time for students preparing for the IB SL Biology exam.
This course offers concurrent enrollment through MCTC, allowing students to earn four college credits upon successful completion. Concurrent enrollment is not required to take the course; however, students who wish to participate in this option must have a GPA of 2.0 or better.

IB DP HL Biology Year 1
Grade: 11, 12
Term: Year Course
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Chemistry Year 1 preferred
IB Assessment: Students are not eligible to test in Year 1
This is the first year that HL Biology students will take the HL Biology exam (not offered to HL Year 1 students). This course will offer concurrent enrollment through MCTC, allowing students to earn 4 college credits upon successful completion. Concurrent enrollment is not required for the course; however, students who wish to participate in this option must have a GPA of 2.0 or better.
This course will cover approximately 60% of the material necessary for the IB HL Biology exam. Topics include, but are not limited to, water and biological macromolecules, cells, cell energy, genetics, evolution, and ecology.
