Class of 74 Donates to Laker Locker

The Class of 74 donated $1500 to the Laker Locker. Pictured left to right are Amy Engler, SW AP; Colette MacIver, SW parent; Patti Arntz (Class of 74), Steve Mosborg (Class of 74), and Dr. Ed Bennett, SW Principal.

The Laker Locker, opened in October 2023 by current Assistant Principal Amy Engler and past Assistant Principal Megan Paulis de Rangel, is housed at Southwest High School near the College, Counselor and Career Center (CCC).  It is a FREE student store where students can get necessities such as school supplies, snacks, clothing, basic hygiene, household items, and pantry staples.  It is a no-questions-asked resource for SW students and their families to ensure their physical and mental wellbeing is being addressed as an integral part of a Southwest education.

The Laker Locker is also a great resource for families that are new-to-country or new to the area. As the school year progresses and needs of SW students and families continue, restocking of supplies will be required.  The Laker Locker is completely run in-house and relies on donations from the Southwest Community. The $1500 donation from the SW Class of ’74 will allow the Laker Locker to build a foundation from which to draw funds on an ongoing basis.

The Laker Locker is a resource all about neighbors helping neighbors and we couldn’t be more proud of how our SW community has come together.  Whether you’ve recently moved here or have been around a while, the Laker Locker is here to lend a hand.  Let’s continue to give back and ensure every SW student and family feels supported and settled in their new school.

With partnership and service as core to “Anchored in Excellence” values at Southwest, it is especially rewarding witnessing alumni integrate so closely to support one of the current student bodies’ needs.  Laker Pride is alive and well!

Thank you to the Class of ’74 for your generosity and making an impact in the SW community!   Those interested in donating supplies to the Laker Locker should check out the Amazon Wishlist:  Amazon Laker Locker Link . Items ordered will be shipped directly to Southwest.  Supporting each other by sharing what we can makes our school and community stronger for everyone!

Senior Party set for May 31

Parent volunteers are needed to help plan one of the best events at Southwest: the Senior Party!  This event provides an opportunity for all seniors to gather for an overnight party at the end of senior year.  It is a great tradition and we need your help! A few core committee members anchor the event, but assistance is needed with Co-Chairs, Transportation, Volunteer Recruitment/Management, and more. We also need parents of younger Lakers to lean in now and learn the ropes to ensure this wonderful tradition continues. Please contact Katie Burns at katie.burns471@gmail.com to learn how you can help.

Minnesota Orchestra Connects with Southwest

Charles Lazarus, Assistant Principal Trumpet in the Minnesota Orchestra, spent time at Southwest on 9.16 working with students in our instrumental music and Unified programs. He was at Southwest courtesy of a grant from MPR. What an amazing opportunity for our students to interact with a world class trumpeter!

Lunch Expectations 24-25

As a reminder, Southwest will refuse delivery of any food/beverages purchased by students from delivery services such as Door Dash this year. Please tell your Laker not to order.

Each student is eligible for one free lunch daily in the Laker Cafe. Students may also bring their own lunches from home. Only juniors and seniors may leave the building for lunch. No students are admitted into the building between 1:30 p.m. and 3:10 p.m. without written permission from a parent/guardian.

Temporary Volunteers Needed in Front Office

"The SW front office is giving a fond farewell to Yasmim Figueroa and her replacement will not be starting until mid-October, so we are looking for parent and community support to help fill the gap to answer phones, listen to & record attendance voicemails and perform light administrative assistant work in the main office starting Monday, Sept. 23.

If you've ever wondered what it's like to be a "fly on the wall" during your child's high school - this is a very low-risk way to do so.  You will have fun interaction with students as they pass through the office, you'll get to know members of the administrative team and maybe even spy your student from a distance while they are eating lunch.

Thank you in advance for considering helping out - even an hour here or there is extremely valuable.

Thank you!"
