Rufus Brown was born and raised in the North Minneapolis area and attended Minneapolis Public Schools K-12. He began his career on a locked adolescent behavioral and chemical health unit in the University of Minnesota Fairview Riverside Hospital, in the early 1990’s. He has over 30 years’ experience working with youth across all settings, including residential, correctional, outpatient, homeless shelters and school settings.
He comes to us at Minneapolis Public Schools after working the last 11 years in an all sober high school setting, and part time with adults in a residential clinical setting. He is a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC), licensed by the Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy, with the State of Minnesota. In his current role as an LADC on the Mental Health Support Services team he will be convening with several schools within the district to be of assistance and offer support.
Rufus is a counselor that likes utilizing any combination of approaches including, person centered, solution oriented, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and is skilled in developing rapport and student engagement. Rufus has lived experience, and cultural competencies across different socioeconomic levels, reflective of the vast diversity of youth he has worked with. In his personal life, Rufus is SCUBA certified and enjoys diving adventures, and is a diehard Minnesota Vikings Fan.
