The first full week of October is Banned Books Week. Many people try to ban books from school libraries because they feel that the content is not appropriate for children. These are some of the reasons people want us to remove certain books from school media centers.
We are a K-8, so some of the books on the list of challenged books are in our media center, and some are not. Below are some we have in our media center. You can decide for yourself if it's appropriate for you!
Melissa's Story (formerly known as George)
Reasons: Challenged, banned, and restricted for LGBTQIA+ content, conflicting with a religious viewpoint, and not reflecting “the values of our community”
Sex is a Funny Word
Reasons: challenged, banned, and relocated for LGBTQIA+ content; for discussing gender identity and sex education; and for concerns that the title and illustrations were “inappropriate”
Something Happened In Our Town
Reasons: Challenged for “divisive language” and because it was thought to promote anti-police views
Harry Potter series
Reasons: banned and forbidden from discussion for referring to magic and witchcraft, for containing actual curses and spells, and for characters that use “nefarious means” to attain goals

Common Sense Media has designated the week of 10/14-18 as Digital Citizenship week, and they have created a calendar of 5 lessons for gr. K-2, 3-5, and 6-8. It's more important than ever for students (well, everyone!) to know how to spot phony information, how to avoid identity theft, and how to use, not misuse, AI.
Lessons can be found at Common Sense Education's website.
