Monochromatic Series (March 13, 2020)

My goal for these pieces was to demonstrate my abilities to paint shapes in monochromatic colors. Each piece was appropriated from a picture that I took recently. Therefore, the colors I used were based on the surroundings or one of my favorite colors. The meaning of my piece is to bring simplicity to the complex because there are times in which we need to look at the “big picture.”

Pride Eagle (1/15/20)

Medium: Acrylic paint on Canvas and cardboard

My goals for my piece were to illustrate my Mexican pride in different forms in my art. For example, the background colors in my piece represent the Mexican flag. I also made the eagle on the flag be more of the center point by having it pop out the piece with the use of cardboard. I also wanted to give texture to the eagle by cutting the cardboard with some rough edges to make the corners more detailed when putting on acrylic paint.

La Mujer (03/13/20)

The portrait of a girl represents that anyone can give that happiness to me, a small conversation gives me that connection with another person. I love knowing that I can meet people. The colors I used only emphasize the amount of joy a person contains. It’s the first thing I notice about a person when we speak.

Koi

My intention for the work was to recreate a koi pond by using brighter colors to bring out the complimentary colors of the orange fish and the blue water. I wanted to blend the water more, and maybe add more highlights, but that was not available to me at the time. This art is a reflection of the peace I felt at the time, and the mystical aura of the water.

This piece uses a found object, a photo card from a vintage store that reads, “Oak Canyon from Mormon Temple”. I did not choose the card for it’s inscription, but instead thought that it would be a good frame for the Korean words in the upper left.

These six pieces are part of two series projects, both of which focused on fashion my development of sketching and creating clothes. The Identity Series (The first two pieces) explore my identity as both a person and an artist through a fashion sketch and a dress shirt I made. The second series focuses on a flower corsage I created in class. Throughout, it experiments with different ways to capture the corsage and its beauty.

My goals for this artwork were to practice making mixed media pieces, and to create a colorful, balanced, and fairly realistic-looking piece. I also wanted to improve my painting skills and paint some animals I haven’t made much art of before. The meaning behind this piece was simply that I have an immense love for animals and nature, and I wanted to capture the beauty of some of my favorite animals and other organisms. That’s also why the name of the piece is the spotted hyena’s scientific name, since I’m into taxonomy and zoology too.

My goals for these art pieces were to represent nature and myself in various forms with different materials. Nature is represented in the paintings and boxes, and myself in the book. I chose the motifs of jelly fish and trees because I like their flowing movement.

Skies

My goal for this series was to create 3 paintings of clouds that were all different, yet cohesive. I have a love for nature and I very much appreciate the beauty found in the sky. In this piece I not only wanted to capture the beauty of the sky, clouds more specifically, but also showcase how the sky and clouds can take on so many different forms. I chose to use acrylic paint because it is very easy to blend with, as well as gives good, vibrant color which is often found in the sky. I used images of clouds found on Google Images, as a reference for the contour and color of clouds, but did not model my painting as a whole off of any images.

Series Project, Animated Movies 3/13/20

The goal of my piece was to create a series with a subtle connection to my other pieces. I wanted the piece to have similar characteristics like animated and simplistic. I decided to create 3 screen caps from 3 animated movies, using pointillism. I chose 3 animated movies I like and think are aesthetically pleasing. My first piece is from Alice in Wonderland.
