Mid Prairie Future Problem Solving teams compete in Regional Bowl

On Friday, February 1st, eight Mid Prairie Middle School and High School Future Problem Solving Teams traveled to Iowa City to put their creative problem solving skills to the test. Students competed against other Grant Wood Area Education Agency schools in the Qualifying Problem Regional Bowl. A future scene pertaining to the theme of “Food Loss and Waste” was given at the start of the competition. Teams spent two hours on the written competition following the six steps of problem solving to identify challenges and an underlying problem, brainstorm solutions, set and apply criteria to select the best solution, and write a detailed action plan of their solution. Following the written competition teams prepared skits with props to present their action plan to a panel of judges and other teams and audience members. Sixth graders Lydia Beachy and Charlotte Sieren won 2nd place in the Junior Division for their Presentation of Action Plan. In the Middle Division, eighth graders Amara Jones, Kina Miller, and Alivia Poock won 2nd place and ninth graders Lilou Beachy, Madeline Nonnenmann, and Terra Richardson won 4th place for their Presentation of Action Plans. Coaches Rebecca Yoder and Kurtis Broeg were proud of the intense effort, creativity, communication, and teamwork all their students put into the competition. The written competition packets are sent to evaluators across the state for judging in the next few weeks to determine who will go to the State Bowl in Ames on April 5th and 6th. Teams who compete at the State Bowl have a chance of advancing on to the International Bowl hosted at the University of Massachusetts Amherst on June 5-9.
