Mock Trial Project

Students will understand the functions of the three branches of government and the balance of individual rights. Students will explore the history behind the American Revolution and the origins of our Republic. Students will demonstrate critical thinking and understand key contemporary issues through the exploration of landmark court cases; current and pending. The project will culminate with a public mock trial.

Just mercy

Just Mercy is a book about the justice system and the death penalty. There is a man named Bryan Stevenson and he works to get wrongly accused people off of death row. He works on the case of Walter McMillan, who is a black man that was accused of a murder he didn't commit. Stevenson then works hard to try and save him before his execution date.

All White jury assignment

This assignment was where we read an article and watched a video on juries and how someones race bias can impact a jury's decisions. It talked about things like how all white juries convict people of color more often, and how adding just one person of color can make the whole decision less race based.

Bill of rights quiz

This quiz was on the bill of rights and the 10 amendments. We worked with a partner to read a scenario and decide whether or not it violated the persons rights and identify what amendment that it related to. For this assignment, my partner and I, got a meets. This is because we only got one of them wrong.

Court vocabulary quiz

This quiz was on the different vocabulary words used in court and what they mean. Some examples are bailiff, defense attorney, and plaintiff. we had a definition and had to identify what they meant or what their job was. For this assignment i got an exceeds.

Mock trial exhibition

This exhibition was where we had to write a script as a group and then perform a mock trial. For the preparation and civics portion of the exhibition, I got a meets. I also got a meets for the actual oral presentation portion of this exhibition.

Just mercy essay

This essay was about the main theme of the book Just Mercy. I thought that the main theme of this book was equity and how Bryan Stevenson (the author) challenged a corrupt system. For this assignment, I got a meets.
