Long-term learning target: I can identify physical features of the Western Hemisphere and explain the positive and negative interactions people have had with those systems historically.

Cultural regions of the Native Americans

Guiding Question

How did the Native Americans adapt to the physical environments in which they lived?

State Standards

  1. Classify and analyze the types of human and geographic connections between places.

  2. Identify physical features of the Western Hemisphere and explain their effects on people who reside in the region.

  3. Analyze positive and negative interactions of human and physical systems in the Western Hemisphere and give examples of how people have adapted to their physical environment.

Impact

Students will explore theories as to how the first people migrated to North America. Then, students will examine the various Native American cultural regions within North America as they analyze how these people interacted with the geographic features within their landscape. Finally, students will create a replica of one of the styles of homes of the Native Americans as well as adding modern features to it that would make it suitable for today’s climate and environment. This project will give students both a better appreciation for how people have and still continue to adpat to the physical environments around them.
