This year during math, we are working hard to become proficient in all 4th grade standards. As we do this, we are making sure to have fun and learn with laughter! One of the most important things we talk about in our math classes is WHY we solve mathematical problems the way we do, rather than focusing on just HOW we solve the problems.

There are many things you can do at home to support your child while they are learning mathematics:

• Encourage your child to explore mathematical situations as you encounter them at home and in your daily life. Real-world connections are immensely important - they help children see why math is important and how people use math every day in a variety of ways.

• Ask your child to explain their thinking while they are solving problems. The most important question you can ask them is, "Why did you do it that way?"

• Be open to new ways of mathematical thinking. Your child will most likely learn a variety of problem solving strategies at school, many of which may be very different from the way you learned to solve mathematical problems.

• As they explore mathematics, provide them with support, but let them make mistakes. Mistakes are opportunities to LEARN!

• Practice basic facts - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division! The goal in 4th grade is to answer each basic fact in 3 sec. or less by the end of the school year.
