Books & Supplies for Band
Students need the following books for class and sectional purposes. Local music stores stock these materials (Schmitt Music, Ekroth Music, Groth Music and JW Pepper).
6th Grade: RED Standard of Excellence Book 1 by Bruce Pearson
BLUE Standard of Excellence Book 2 by Bruce Pearson (not needed until Winter Concert)
Percussionists also need Alfred’s Drum Method, Book 1

Instrument Supplies and Accessories
Students are responsible for providing their own instrumental supplies and accessories as needed for band class during the year (i.e. reeds, oil, swabs, mutes, mouthpieces, neck straps and cleaning supplies). Percussionists should have a stick bag with mallets and snare drum sticks. Supply checks will be made on a regular basis throughout the year.
Percussion Equipment
All percussion students should have the following equipment: stick bag, drum sticks, rubber xylo mallets and yarn marimba mallets. 7th and 8th graders also need General Timpani Mallets.
Instrument Identification
Students are encouraged to have at least two forms of identification on their instrument case. You may use a luggage tag, or some other type of label that connects to the handle and/or case Additionally, we recommend that parents keep a record of the instrument’s make, model and serial number.
Instrument Rental from the Music Store
Instruments can be rented from one of the music stores below. Each store has a rent-to-own program where each payment goes towards the purchase of the instrument. More information can be found on the websites.
Instrument Rental from the School
Students who receive Educational Benefits, or those that play french horn, baritone, or tuba, can rent an instrument from the school. The cost for individual instruments is $90 for the year ($35 for Educational Benefits). Two instruments (french horn, baritone, tuba) are $130 for the year ($50 for Educational Benefits). A copy of the instrument rental agreement is below.
Care of School Provided Instruments
Any student using a school provided instrument is responsible for its continued care and proper maintenance. This will include any repairs due to negligence or abuse. This also includes percussion equipment.
Reeds
In 6th grade clarinet and saxophone players should be using a 2 1/2 reed. In 7th grade students typically switch to a strength 3 reed and continue using that through 8th grade
Trumpet and baritone players commonly use Al Cass valve oil or Yamaha Synthetic Oil for their valves.
Trombone players typically use Slide-O-Mix (All-in-One) for their slides.
French Horn players generally use Yamaha Synthetic Oil for their valves.
