The Level 4 UAL Foundation Diploma is a fast paced and challenging year long course. The aim of this course is to educate students to make informed decisions, which will facilitate their progression (primarily, but not exclusively) to highly competitive degree courses in Higher Education.

This course provides a range of projects, which develop and build each individual’s existing skills and engage the cohort with new techniques, concepts and practices relevant to their chosen pathway within fashion, textiles and communications.

The programme of study is predominantly experimental and the students identify their interests and strengths through the production of work, which reflects contemporary professional practice.

This highly regarded course has 100% success rate over many years, with our talented students progressing to the best fashion universities in Europe, including Central St Martins, Royal Academy Antwerp, Westminster, London College of Fashion & Kingston University. Pathways include Fashion Design, Textiles & Fashion Communications.

Course Overview

The course is taught with a holistic approach to the subject of fashion as a specialism within the broader context of art & design practice. It is divided into 3 clear stages.

Part One - Diagnostic Investigation into Creative Practice

During this stage of the course students will be introduced to a range of disciplines associated with the subject of fashion through project work and workshops. Students are encouraged to experiment with a range of materials and processes that will support the development of ideas within this field of practice. This includes drawing, research processes, idea development, textiles, communications and illustration. The practical nature of the course is under-pinned with historical and contextual studies through visits to museums and galleries to build contextual knowledge. Regular, personalised feedback and assessments will help you find the area of specialism that you are best suited to as you move onto stage 2 of the course.

Part Two - Developing Specialist Practice

The second stage of the course allows students to select a specialism from Fashion Design, Textiles and Fashion Communications. You will then work towards identifying suitable progression opportunities by developing an individual portfolio of work in preparation for university interviews, that reflects your personal interests and aesthetic. You will be taken through the process of writing your personal statement and you will be fully supported throughout the application and interview period.

Part Three - Consolidating Practice

The final stage of the course is an opportunity to consolidate previous learning to create a self proposed and directed project that allows further development within your chosen pathway. The outcomes of this project lead to your final grade for the foundation diploma and the work is exhibited in the end of year show at our Hortensia Road Campus.
