For my first year’s final project I chose to explore isolation and the risks posed on mental and physical health; I was curious to discover the devastating effects caused from an activity that at first thought does not seem as capable of causing such harm. I investigated a vast array of studies that were performed by renowned universities, scientists, and researchers over the course of the past twenty years whilst I also explored the theme of isolation within 20th century art. For my outcome I transformed an androgynous tuxedo blazer by making its silhouette asymmetrical and adding a satin lapel which carries on around the back. The abstract print was influenced by the distorted forms present throughout Francis Bacon’s oeuvre whilst it is also reminiscent of wilting flower petals which can be associated with the internal as well as physical decay a chronically isolated individual experiences.
Portraying isolation through the eyes of Alberto Giacometti, Frank Auerbach, Francis Bacon and Léon Spilliaert: all four remarkable artistic figures of the 20th century have explored the themes of solitude, alienation, melancholy, and anxiety within their oeuvre in differing and incredibly fascinating ways, commenting on ideas with regards to existentialism and self-consciousness.
The above drawings highlight solitude, the heart's veins as well as platelet aggregation, a disorder that amongst other events leads to thrombosis and is often associated with the condition .
Chronically isolating has proven to be three times more detrimental to health compared to smoking and led me to observe the abstract pattern of smoke, whilst brain dysfunctions are additionally linked with the condition; through drawing I aimed to inform the organ's silhouette.
