Throughout this project I have explored how situations of hysteria and desperation turn dance into a deadly performance.
I began the project with the dancing plague of 1518, a case of mass hysteria in which the victims frantically and continuously danced for weeks, until their feet bled, they collapsed of exhaustion, and even died. All whilst more dancers joined.
Dancing Marathons that took place during the Great Depression inspired the later part of the project. The desperate contestants competed for weeks, in hopes of winning the cash prize.
Both cases are a dark result of living through tumultuous times in society.
