Initial Research into Victorian illusionists and their shows which contained age old tricks performed with overwhelming showmanship. Illusionist photography was a wave of photography created to trick the eye and create a human that appeared to have multiple heads or limbs. The book the Vet's daughter heavily inspired my initial research with its descriptive prose which influenced the slightly dated and eerie aesthetic of this project.
Research developing into initial design ideas with references from Andy Warhol, Harry Houdini and Ann Demeulemeester. Warhols work inspired me to shift my research and responses into the modern day, influencing me to create print work that would appear on my final garments. I created these by shooting my own imagery and manipulating the imagery many different ways using Photoshop. The more i played around with the prints the more ideas i gathered for my final collection.
The fashion references helped me think resourcefully and encouraged me to use old white shirts to do all of my draping for this project. This ended up giving me many different outcomes and was an easy way to develop silhouette as the drapes could go directly onto a body. This draping also gave me the correct styling i was hoping to create in this collection, a modern twist on the illusionists assistant.
