Resident-as-Teacher (RAT)

Welcome to the Resident as Teacher Elective!

This elective has been created in order to enhance the teaching skills of our senior residents at Montefiore Medical Center. The following are your goals for this rotation:

  • To improve your confidence as a clinical educator and team leader

  • To review some primary literature on medical education in both the inpatient and outpatient settings,

  • To prepare you for the role of educator and leader by providing you with practical teaching techniques that work in a variety of settings in which you teach.

  • To provide you with real-time feedback on your teaching from attending faculty, in order to improve your teaching techniques

  • To learn how to better set goals with, observe, and give constructive feedback to your learners

  • To enhance your physical diagnosis skills, and to practice these skills in the education of medical students

  • To familiarize you with the art of bedside teaching, and help you envision how to further implement these rounds

  • To improve the clinical teaching by senior residents at Einstein/Montefiore

Responsibilities

  • Precept junior residents in an outpatient setting while getting direct feedback from faculty observers (2 sessions, but can do more if you'd like. Just ask!)

  • Attend noon conferences daily and CRS on Fridays

  • Attend attending rounds twice weekly, and create a mini teach back session for the team based around their patients

  • Attend work rounds with junior residents and use ToWR as a feedback tool (2 sessions)

  • Lead a Journal Club for the housestaff once-twice in a two week period

  • Create online educational material for the housestaff website for Monte Minute based on topics discussed at CRS or noon conference. Submit to inpatient firm chief resident.

  • Teach physical diagnosis skills to third year medical students on their internal medicine rotation using the skills you have learned

  • Complete the Hopkins Modules: EBM Rx and Dx

  • Attend advanced physical diagnosis rounds in order to enhance your physical diagnosis skills (Check Home page for Global Health Rounds)

To be turned in/completed by end of rotation

  • Schedule Observed Resident Feedback Session with Moses Firm Chief Resident

  • Precepting Feedback evaluations (If at FCC/CHCC, give to Lucy in chief office or place in box at CHCC. If at CFCC, place in Sheira's box)

  • TOWR form (If at FCC/CHCC, give to Lucy in chief office or place in box at CHCC. If at CFCC, place in Sheira's box)

  • Email Monte Minute to Moses Firm Chief Resident
