Unit 1

In our first CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts) unit, students will dive into a collection of beloved classic stories while strengthening the reading and language skills they developed in second grade. This unit serves as an exciting bridge into third-grade literacy, helping students build confidence as they read increasingly complex texts.

What will students learn?

Throughout this unit, students will:

• Read and discuss classic stories featuring memorable characters and exciting adventures.

• Identify important story elements, including characters, setting, plot, theme, dialogue, and point of view.

• Build vocabulary by exploring rich, descriptive language found in classic literature.

• Strengthen reading comprehension by asking and answering questions, making predictions, summarizing, and supporting their thinking with evidence from the text.

• Review and reinforce foundational reading, spelling, grammar, and writing skills introduced in previous grades.

Students will also complete a beginning-of-the-year reading assessment. This assessment helps me identify each child's strengths and any areas where extra support may be beneficial as we begin third grade.

How can you help at home?

You can support your child by:

• Reading together for at least 20 minutes each day.

• Asking your child to retell the stories they read, including the characters, setting, problem, and solution.

• Talking about new vocabulary words they encounter and encouraging them to use those words in conversation.

• Encouraging your child to explain their thinking by using details from the story.
