What is CKLA?

JHC's third grade reading class uses CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts), a comprehensive reading and language arts program that helps students build strong skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. CKLA is designed to grow students’ background knowledge about the world while also strengthening foundational skills like decoding, vocabulary, and comprehension. Each unit includes rich, engaging texts, both fiction and nonfiction, along with explicit instruction in phonics, grammar, and writing. Students learn important content in science, history, and literature as they develop into confident, capable readers and writers. CKLA provides a consistent structure across grade levels, helping students build the knowledge and skills they need for success in school and beyond.

What if my child is absent?

If your child is absent from school, watching these videos is an excellent to help them catch up when they return to school. I will include the date that we will study each lesson as we go throughout the year. Check above to see which unit we are studying now.

How can I help my child improve their reading skills at home?

Read! Having your child read at home is the most effective thing they can do to improve their reading skills.
