I currently speak both Spanish and French and am in the process of learning Italian. I also have previous experience with Latin and Arabic.
I believe in the importance of acquiring a second language in today's global society. Here are my thoughts on the languages I teach:
Spanish
With the number of Spanish-speakers growing, it is an extremely beneficial skill to develop in today's workforce. I cannot tell you how many people have told me that they wish they had dedicated time to study and learn Spanish. However, knowing Spanish is not only a positive thing for the workplace. Knowing Spanish opens up a world of wonderful music, television, film, literature, and travel!
French
While French may not seem as beneficial to learn in today's day and age - especially in this part of the country - it is still a wonderful option in choosing a second language to learn. Millions of people found on every continent speak French. As with Spanish, knowing French can allow you to explore amazing music, television, film, literature, and more! Knowing French also opens up the opportunity to confidently travel to French-speaking countries.
The younger you are when you begin to learn a foreign language, the better. I would encourage. Since foreign language is an elective at MCHS, I would strongly recommend all students take at least two semesters of foreign language.
If you plan on going to a college or university, I definitely recommend that you take two semesters of foreign language as many of these institutes either have an admission requirement that you have taken foreign language, or they will require you to take foreign language as general education (in which chase, having some experience with foreign language under your belt when you take the courses later on is a great idea!).
