FAQs
I want to participate, but I don't work in Melbourne/Victoria. Am I still eligible?
Yes! You are still eligible to participate. Our study is open to all Australian paramedics. If you are interested in participating, but unsure of your eligibility, please fill out an EOI (link coming soon) and book a pre-screen call. We can discuss the eligibility criteria with you during the pre- screen call. Alternatively you can email us with any questions at base.asap@monash.edu.
I want to participate, but I work a regular shift work roster and don't know when I will have time for the in lab simulation. Am I still able to participate?
All of our participants are paramedics who currently book shift work. We schedule the in-lab simulation to occur during leave blocks, and will work with you to find a time that matches your availability.
I'm interested, and have someone I would like to do the in-lab simulation with. Is that allowed?
Yes, as long as you both meet the eligibility criteria and we can find a time that fits in both of your schedules, you are able to complete the in-lab simulation with a friend. During our pre-screen calls we often encourage participants to sign up with a friend wherever possible.
I want to participate, but I don't think I'm eligible. What should I do?
If you are interested in participating, but unsure of your eligibility, please fill out an EOI and book a pre-screen call. We can discuss the eligibility criteria with you during the pre-screen call. Alternatively you can email us with any questions at base.asap@monash.edu.
I've done the pre-screening call, completed the sleep & health survey, and submitted my availability. Why haven't I been scheduled yet?
Due to the nature of paramedic work, participants complete the in-lab simulation in pairs. If you haven't been scheduled yet, we are probably waiting for another participant whose availability aligns with yours. As soon as we have a partner and lab time for you, we will notify you to confirm. In the meantime, if you have paramedic friends or colleagues that you would enjoy completing the simulation with, please have them complete an EOI. As best as possible we will try to match up participants that are interested in working together.
What should I bring to the in-lab simulation with me?
We have a full list of what to bring and not to bring on the Lab stay information guide. You will also receive an email with additional information about the in-lab simulation approximately 4-5 prior to your scheduled start date. As a general rule, you should bring the appropriate amount of clothes and toiletries for a 5 day stay. Make sure you have clothes you are comfortable completing scenarios in, as well as clothes to sleep and relax in.

Some of the questionnaires included in project ASAP's survey instrument assess symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, alcohol use and sleep disorders. This may cause some emotional embarrassment or distress. You are encouraged to contact and inform the researchers, your local General Practitioner or the support services listed below if this is the case.
