HOW WE STUDY PARAMEDICS & SHIFT WORK
Project ASAP examines the impact that shiftwork, and the resulting circadian rhythm disruption, have on paramedic decision making and work performance. Participants complete an online survey about their current health and sleep habits. Then they wear a wrist tracker to monitor their sleep and fill out a 5 minute sleep diary for 7 days. Immediately after participants complete their at home sleep monitoring, they come to the Monash sleep lab to complete a simulated 2-day shift, 2-night shift rotation. During the four simulated shifts, participants complete a series of high fidelity paramedic work tasks and scenarios in the Monash Department of Paramedicine Simulation lab. Throughout the simulated rotation, physiological, cognitive, and decision making measures are used to assess how shift schedules impact individuals.
