Another form of care, choice and agency provided by the school comes in the form of the total autonomy to determine your SIL experience every fortnight. The world offers endless choices for what you can learn, i.e., the pearls you can uncover.
This form of SIL is called Student-Initiated Learning Pursuits (SILP).
How do you get started on SILP?
1. Make a list of your learning interests. It can be a sport taught by an external coach like fencing, or teaching yourself how to play a musical instrument or enrolling in a public speaking course or reading up a step by step guide on gardening. The possibilities are staggering. Read up or talk to people to generate these ideas.
2. Explore who you can engage to train you if you want formal training or how you will learn. Alternatively, you may want to explore online options such as training through YouTube videos. If so, check to ensure that the content is developed by a reliable source. If in doubt, approach your teachers for advice.
3. Find out how to enrol or go about managing the costs involved, if any. For example, you may be allowed to tap on your Edusave funds for some of these options. For others, you may have to foot the bill yourself.
4. If the course falls on a different day from the HBL day, you can still attend the learning schedule, as long as the arrangement does not disrupt your curriculum and co-curricular commitments the rest of the week. Use the one-hour-per-fortnight schedule as a guide to track your progress.
5.Inform your FT of the learning title and learning plan once you have determined what it is.
6. Like those who have opted for SCP, those of you who prefer SILP would also be using the ePortfolio template to track your learning.
