Beyond the Classroom: Going Deeper and At Own Pace
Conducted every fortnight, the Home-based learning (HBL) days are less structured than a typical day in school to allow you the time and space to explore what your teachers have been teaching you in class.
Staying home once a fortnight saves you time, (e.g. travel-time) and space, (e.g., the alone-time) - to exercise your own initiative in learning. With a day set aside for you to study from home, you get some cool benefits. You get to make use of the freed up time to do some serious catching up; you can also take your time to think more deeply about aspects of learning in the previous fortnight that had intrigued you; and, if your curiosity is piqued, you have the time to do your research on your own or in collaboration with your friends.
One of the greatest joys of learning is to explore your own questions. The Internet is a rich treasure trove of information waiting to be discovered and evaluated. Of course, remember to check if your sources are reliable!
How we structure HBL in Swiss
In our school, the HBL day falls on Even Week Fridays.
The HBL day complements classroom teaching for the followingfoursubjects: English Language, Mother-Tongue, Science and Mathematics.
The lessons for these subjects are asynchronous in nature. This means that teachers will not be holding online lessons or following a schedule for the whole class to study at the same time. This openness is deliberately designed into the fortnightly HBL structure to maximise the flexibility and agency in the way you can learn.
If you think you need more support and structure, e.g. lack a home environment conducive for home-based learning, or need access to certain school facilities, please approach your Form Teacher or the Year Head of your level to make arrangements for you to return to school on HBL day.
