Mr. Raquiza taught in St. Stephen's School from 1966 to 2000. His most memorable memory in school was connecting with the staff through games and going out on picnics with them. The camaraderie they had especially in the 60s during the Primary 1 registration. They even camped in school. The following day, they saw parents lining up as early as 6.30 am outside the school waiting to get a registration number.
For Mr. Raquiza, interacting with the boys in many different ways like identifying a well- deserved student/s and taking them out on a Saturday for a meal was also one of his memorable memories. Planning games and educational activities with the students coming up with their own ideas e.g. The class was divided into 5 groups and each group came up with four problem-sums based on their knowledge of corresponding, alternate, adjacent angles, parallel lines etc. involving at least 3 steps to arrive at the answers.
He also remembers how the school building went through tremendous changes physically, from a simple school in a very isolated area in Siglap with a sandy area for public assembly to a concrete one much later and now with a proper hall for many other events and functions.
One memorable project that was carried out collectively by staff, students and canteen stallholders. For a month they collected donations from all and even from parents to help an ex- student of SSS in his young adulthood, Derek Lauchengco, to get prosthetics for his leg. He had cancer at that time. The project stirred up many, many kind hearts. The money was donated to him at a simple but touching ceremony on the assembly ground in front of the school.
