I taught in SSS from July 2002 to December 2009. The blessing of the newly constructed SSS was about two months after I joined the school. Since I am a Brother, I was tasked to organize the event. That was the second time I was involved in the blessing of a school. The first one was back in the 90’s, the blessing of the newly constructed De La Salle School where I was teaching then. Indeed, it was a great honour to be involved in these two holy events.
Of all the subjects I taught, I enjoy teaching PE most. During those days, the PE syllabus was not so strict and the boys were more adventurous, I was able to come up with unconventional activities to make the PE lessons more interesting for the boys. For example, I brought the students to walk along a drain just outside the school and to jog around the school campus.
About a year after I joined SSS, I started to do up the prayer room. I approached the PTA chairlady and she invited me to speak a few words to the parents in one of their meetings in the school library.
I was worried when I saw there were a number of Muslim mothers present. I briefly told the parents why we needed to do up the prayer room and how that would benefit Christian and non-Christians alike if the students were better behaved by praying more. I was deeply touched when the Muslim mothers assured me that they would support the project.
The fund-raising activities raised about $7000. In the end, a total of $10 000 was collected. It was a miracle because that amount was raised within a period of one month and that was the money we needed to refurbish the prayer room!
