In the early 19th century, the British arrived and established a port city in Singapore. Through their policies, they shaped Singapore's politics, economy and society. Immigrants from all over the world came to Singapore to work and contribute to this developing city.
What led Raffles to Singapore by 1819? Why did immigrants from all over the world choose Singapore? In this unit, we will learn about how historical events often result from both the decisions and actions of individuals as well as broader circumstances in their country, region and the world. We will also consider the changes and continuities in Singapore during British rule.
This unit concludes with the study of the fall of Singapore to the Japanese in 1942, a result of both internal and external factors, the decisions of individuals and groups as well as circumstances.
