This poignant scene of young men was taken from a street mural painted by local 3D artist, Yip Yew Chong. The piece was commissioned by the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan and unveiled by Minister Gan Kim Yong at the opening of the Singapore Hokkien Festival 2017 on 13 April 2017.
Mr Yip Yew Chong gave up his job as a financial director to devote himself full time to his passion: painting street murals. The self-taught artist specialises in nostalgic heritage scenes and his work can be seen around the region. Click on the button to find out more about him.

Coloured using modern image-processing technology, the photograph takes us right back to that boat deck a century ago, giving us a hint of how these coolies must have looked and felt upon arriving at their destination.
