Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions about the School

Q1. What time does school start and end in PL(Sec)?

School starts at 7.20 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On Tuesday and Thursday, the students report to school later at 8.20 a.m., so as to let them have breakfast with their parents. When the curriculum ends depends on the daily timetable, but it usually ranges from 1.25 p.m. to the latest 3.10 p.m. However, this does not include after-school activities like CCAs.

Q2. What is the enrichment and CCA schedule in PL(Sec)?

Every day’s after school activities are scheduled into Academic afternoons and CCA afternoons.

Generally, the schedule follows:

  • Mondays – CCA afternoons

  • Tuesdays – CCA afternoons

  • Wednesdays and Thursdays – Academic afternoons : Academic Talent Development/ Enrichment/Consultation/Remediation programmes

  • Fridays – CCA afternoons

Uniformed groups mostly have their training on Fridays, while Sports and Performing Arts usually have their training on 2 out of the 3 days. All CCAs end by 6.30 p.m. Please see 2021 CCA schedule as a guide.

Curriculum

Q3. Will my daughter be supported academically?

The Total Curriculum in PLMGS (Sec) comprises the Curriculum and the Co-Curriculum. Through the Total Curriculum, we seek to nurture our students holistically into ‘whole persons’ which as stated in our Mission. As such, PL focuses on holistic development where we focus on all-round excellence of the students. This is aligned to the school value of Excellence. Our O- and N-Level results have been consistently exceeding national averages.

At the same time, PL(Sec) also emphasizes character development. The school believes in stretching the potential of the students and giving them ample opportunities to excel. We are proud to share that our students have received the Lee Kuan Yew-All Round Excellence Award, a national level award for achievement in education that recognises well-rounded students who have excelled in both academic and non-academic spheres, and who exemplify the qualities articulated in our Desired Outcomes of Education.

Q4. What are the signature programmes that PL(Sec) offers?

In PL(Sec), we offer a curriculum which aims to meet the needs of a wide spectrum of students in three different steams, i.e. Express, Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) streams. Our signature programmes endeavour to develop our PL-Lites into future ready citizens and leaders. Our signature programmes encompass areas such as Student Leadership, Education and Career Guidance, Global Classroom Programme, Faithful-in-Service Programme, Project Rose and Family Champions. We also equip our students 21st Century competencies through our PL21 programme.

Q5. How do you develop students who are strong in Maths and Science?

Students who are strong in Maths and Science can offer ACE (Maths and Science) and Enhanced Enrichment (Robotics) to stretch themselves in these areas.

Q6. Does PL(Sec) offer Higher Mother Tongue?

Yes, we offer Higher Chinese in PL. Students may opt to take HMTL from Sec 1 onwards if they have taken HMTL, HML HMTL at the PSLE and are in the:

  • top 10% of the PSLE cohort; or

  • top 11%-30% of the PSLE cohort and meet the language criteria i.e. an A* grade in the MTL or at least a Merit in HMTL

The HMT offer letter will be sent to parents of eligible students via a personalised email on Registration Day. Parents are required to reply to the offer letter via FormSG by the deadline specified on the offer letter.

Lessons are conducted in school during curriculum time. For other languages, students will have to take the lessons at the language centre (at Newton and Bishan). However, Higher Tamil and Higher Malay Language will only be offered subject to a minimum number.

Q7. Does the school offer Syllabus B for Mother Tongue?

Students who are eligible for MTLB will have to attend the lessons outside of PL in other schools as the school does not conduct MTLB lessons.

Subject Based Banding (SBB)

Q8. Does PL(Sec) offer SBB?

Yes. Students can be laterally transferred to a more demanding course if they show a strong overall performance and the ability to cope with the rigours of the more demanding course.

SBB (Sec) was introduced by MOE to allow for greater flexibility in subject offerings at lower secondary levels, to better cater to the strengths of NA and NT students in English Language, Mathematics, Science and Mother Tongue Languages. Students who had performed well in these subjects at the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) may offer the subjects at a higher level starting from Secondary 1.

Q9. What are the eligibility criteria for SBB intake?

Students who performed well in either English Language, Mathematics, Science and Mother Tongue Languages at the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) may be offered the subjects at a higher level starting from Secondary 1.

Criteria (as reflected in Sec 1 Admission Booklet)

  • NA and NT students who scored A* or A in a PSLE Standard Subject can take the subject at the Express Level.

  • NT students who scored at least C in a PSLE Standard Subject or 1 in a PSLE Foundation subject can take it at NA level.

This is to ensure that students are able to cope with the demands of a subject at the higher level. PL will provide eligible students with an Offer Letter to invite them to apply to take up higher level subjects when they report to the school in December.
